Let’s start with the obvious. One big benefit of giving up smoking is your health. Lung cancer
has become the leading cause of cancer deaths and almost all cases of lung cancer are caused by smoking. Treatment
of lung cancer doesn’t work very well. Most people are dead within a year or two of diagnosis.
As bad as lung cancer is, some might consider it preferable to the other big health risk of
smoking – chronic lung disease. It’s impossible to smoke without damaging your lungs. And before you say that you
knew or heard of somebody that smoked all their life and was “hale and hearty in their 80’s” that person is the
exception, even if it’s true (a lot of these reports fall into the category of urban legends – good stories that
don’t hold up when you check them out). Even if a person doesn’t have obvious disease, their lung function would be
better if they didn’t smoke.
Much more commonly, a smoker’s lung gradually weaken, damaged by the smoke and all its toxins.
They start to get short of breath more easily and as time goes by they can do less and less.
Severe cases deteriorate to chronic bronchitis and emphysema and the person struggle to catch
their breath even when they’re sitting still.
All of this is avoidable if you give up smoking. Although your lungs may not recover completely,
they will get better. And the longer you go without cigarettes, the lower your risk of lung cancer becomes.

Another benefit of giving up smoking is financial. With the price of cigarettes so what it is,
you could easily fund an IRA with the savings. Or take a very nice vacation every year. Isn’t it foolish to spend
so much money on something that’s harmful?
If you quit smoking, you’ll gain some cosmetic benefits as well. Your skin will look healthier.
You won’t have the nicotine stains on your hands. Your breath will be better. Your clothes won’t reek of stale
cigarette smoke.
Another benefit of giving up smoking is that food will taste better. Smoking dulls both your
taste buds and your sense of smell. When you’re smoke-free, you’ll be able to really taste and enjoy your food.
Your home and your car will also benefit when you give up smoking. Smoke clings to surfaces and
especially fabrics, dirtying them and causing that lingering stale smoke smell. Your enviroment will be both
freasher cleaner.
The problem of second hand smoke is very real. If you have children you have very important
reasons to give up smoking. Not only do you want to set a good example, you want to spare them injury from your
second hand smoke.

Yet another benefit is to your mindset. When you’re a smoker, you really aren’t in control of
your life. Your smoking habit controls you. Taking control back feels great. When you give up smoking, you know
that you can make a difficult choice and follow through. That confidence carries over to other aspects of your
life.
You can see that there are many benefits to giving up smoking. Let me encourage you to start. I
won’t sugar-coat it – it won’t be easy.
