How to
Quit Smoking Cigarettes

There are many ways to quit smoking. The one that’s right for you is the one that works for you.
Everyone is different and so their response to a given technique is unique.
My suggestion as you try to figure out how to quit smoking cigarettes is to explore and consider
several different approaches.
Keep an open mind as you do. You may get a sense that one technique seems right for you and
another not so much. However the approach that’s outside your comfort zone may be the one that’s does the trick for
you.

Here’s what I mean. A friend of mine who used to smoke is a nurse. Naturally, being a nurse, she
knew she should quit but never quite got around to making the commitment and going for it. Then a friend of hers,
who was also a nurse who wanted to quit, asked her if she’d go and get acupuncture with her. She was looking for
company and moral support.
My friend didn’t have any particular interest in acupuncture, if fact thought it was a little
weird, but thought it couldn’t hurt and agreed to go.
There wasn’t an acupuncturist in our town so they had to
travel a couple of hours to visit a physician who did acupuncture. I don’t know if they had to go more than
once, but they both got needles in their earlobe.
The end of the story is that my friend who just went to support her colleague never smoked
again. The nurse who’s idea it was to get acupuncture in the first place cut back for a while but didn’t quit
completely. Sometimes you can’t tell what will work unless you try unless you try.
A Combination of Stop Smoking Methods
Often Works Best
The other thing to keep in mind is that for most smokers the best approach is a combination of
methods used together. Here are some ways you can consider using to help you quit.
If there are people in your life who would like to see you quit smoking (your non-smoking
spouse, your kids, etc.) enlist their aid and support. They can help you maintain your resolve if
the going gets tough. Plus, if you’ve made a commitment to others it adds to you motivation to follow through.
Nicotine replacement helps a lot of smokers avoid the physical effects of
nicotine withdrawal. You’ll still have to deal with the psychological dependency, but that’s easier if you’re not
going through nicotine withdrawal at the same time. You could use over the counter forms or the more potent
prescription nicotine replacement methods.
Prescription drugs help many people quit smoking cigarettes. Two that are
often used that have different mechanisms of action are Zyban and Chantrix. Obviously, if you want to try these
you’ll need to discuss them with you physician.
Hypnosis or self-hypnosis tapes can be used with any other stop smoking
method you use. While there isn’t rock solid scientific proof on the usefulness of hypnosis, many successful
quitters swear by it and I don’t see any reason not to try it.
Other aids you could investigate include acupuncture, acupressure, group
support (there are even 12-step quit smoking programs based on AA), herbal supplements and more.
One possibility you should definitely consider is looking into a pre-packaged quit
smoking system.
By that I mean a stop smoking program that combines several methods into a coherent system
that’s greater than the sum of it’s parts. The best such program that I know of is Quit Smoking Right
Now.
This program was developed by a Canadian therapist and combines elements of behavior
conditioning, NLP, acupressure, hypnosis/imagery and more into a completely natural program.
The therapist refined and perfected the method working with patients in his clinic until he
achieved a 90% success rate (!).
