Reasons to Quit Smoking
Every smoker knows somewhere in the back of their mind that there are a lot of
reasons to quit smoking. They know that they should quit.
But quitting isn’t easy so a lot of smokers come up with a long list of excuses to continue
smoking.
A common one is to claim that they need to smoke to deal with all the stress in their life.
Others claim they find smoking enjoyable. Still others say smoking is a sign of their independence.
The list goes on. But the truth is that smoking is one of the most self destructive and
unattractive things you can do.
Here's a quick reminder of some reasons to quit smoking.
Health Reasons to Quit Smoking
I think the most important reason is your health. People think about lung cancer, but that’s the
least of it. At least lung cancer kills you relatively quickly.
It’s much worse to live with crippling chronic lung disease. People can suffer with this for
decades as their condition gradually deteriorates and they become progressively more disabled. It’s hard to enjoy
life when you’re struggling for every breath.
Money Reasons to Quit Smoking
Another reason is the expense. It’s hard to find a more expensive habit.
Most smokers could easily fund a retirement account with what they spend on tobacco. If you stop
smoking, you’ll not only live lionger, you’ll have the money to enjoy the extra years.
Aesthetic Reasons to Quit Smoking
Another reason to stop smoking is aesthetic. It’s hard to believe, but it does appear that
advertising messages are strong enough to create positive associations with something as inherently nasty as
cigarette smoking.
Unlike what the ads would have you believe, smoking is not attractive, sexy or a sign of
independence. It’s a smelly, dirty habit that poisons not only the smoker but those they live with. Smoking stains
your teeth and ruins your skin (it’s easy to spot a long time smoker just by their skin appearance).
And as the billboard said, kissing a smoker is like licking an ashtray. That's certainly a sexy
thought.
About the Excuses to Continue...
People who smoke cigarettes and aren’t ready to quit the habit often make one hundred excuses to
continue.
They will claim that they smoke because they have a stressful job and cigarettes help them to
relax. They will tell you that the pressure from society and the media to quit makes them determined to continue
smoking because nobody is going to tell them what to do. They claim that continuing to smoke is a demonstration of
their independence,
The list of excuse and explainations goes on. But let’s be blunt – they’re all bogus. The
reasons for smoking pale in comparison to the reasons to quit smoking.
Decide to do the right thing and then get whatever help you need to follow through. I hope this
site will be part of the answer for you.
