Stop Smoking Cold Turkey - Part 2
The fact is that most smokers have more difficulty overcoming the psychological
associations they have to smoking than the physical withdrawal. That's part of what I want to address in
Stop Smoking Cold Turkey -Part Two.
When I say that smokers have a psychological habituation or association I mean that they
strongly associate certain activities with smoking.

For example, maybe they always have a cigarette with their first cup of coffee in the morning.
Or they routinely smoke when their talking on the phone or out at a bar with friends or after dinner.
To successfully quit smoking cold turkey you need to have a plan to deal with such situations.
Some you can avoid for a while. For example, if you smoke when you meet friends at a bar, you can wait until you’re
smoke free for a while before you put your self in that situation.
For situations you can’t avoid, it’s helpful to have a plan on how you’ll avoid smoking. People
commonly smoke when they’re eon the phone. I know one smoker who kept a pen and paper by the phone and doodled
instead. Another person I know took up crocheting just to “keep my hands busy” instead of smoking.
Another strategy is to stay busy. This will give you less opportunity to think about smoking. If
there’s some home improvement project or a new hobby you’ve been thinking about trying, this may be a good time to
do it.
These tips will help make it easier to quit smoking cold turkey. In many ways it’s the best way
to go if you’re committed to it. It gets you smoke free immediately and there is no extra expense – no patches or
gum to buy or therapeutic sessions to pay for.
If you’re thinking about trying to go cold turkey, let me encourage you to do so. You have
nothing to lose except your cigarette habit.
If you should try and fail, be easy on yourself. You took on a task that many people wouldn’t
even try. Also remember that the majority of smokers who eventually free themselves from the bondage of smoking
don’t succeed on their first attempt. It typically takes a few goes at it to discover the best approach for
you.
The main thing is that you’re committed to stopping. Keep at it and you’ll succeed. The prize is
well worth the effort.
